The Frazzled Teacher Recommends: The Water Princess

Confessions of a Frazzled Teacher

Do you love books as much as I do? I definitely consider myself an avid reader! I am always on the lookout for new books while taking the time to reread my favorites. Join me each Thursday as I share a classroom treasure with you. Let me know what you think of the book and what book you would recommend!

My students are obsessed with The Water Princess. I must admit that I was reluctant to read this book at first since it just didn't appeal to me, but I do love Peter Reynolds' work and had to check it out (even though he was the illustrator and not the writer)! I'm so glad that I actually took the time to read it!

The story is inspired on the true story of an African model nicknamed Gie Gie. In her mind she is a princess wanting to control the water. In reality, she has to travel miles to get to water with her mother.

What captured my students' interest was that this book is inspired by a real person. There are even pictures of the real Gie Gie at the end of the book. It brought up a lot of great conversations about the similarities and differences in our lives and the life of Gie Gie.

What book would you recommend?
