Weekly Recap - The Good and the Bad

Confessions of a Frazzled Teacher

At the end of each week, I normally write the Good and the Bad. After being with my students this week, I feel like I need a new category - The Weird. They were in goofy moods this week!

Scholastic - This could also go in the Good category. My Scholastic order came in. I got well over 100 books - including 3 classroom sets of picture books as well as a HUGE number of new diverse books! I'm putting in this category because I spent a large amount of money (although I got phenomenal deals and used over 2,000 Bonus Points). It's depressing how much money teachers spend in their classrooms.

Meetings - I went into the week with nothing scheduled. I ended the week with over 3 hours total spent in various meetings (with this week only being a 4 day work week)! There wasn't a day that I had no pop-up meetings. Talk about exhausting! My students even commented on the volume of meetings I had.

Perseverance - This probably should have started in the Bad last week. I gave them what I thought was a simple number search using the multiplication facts we were using for the day. I couldn't get over how quickly this turned into a major meltdown! I'm talking crying, temper tantrums, balled up papers, etc. It came out of nowhere! I could have thrown this activity out and thought of it as a disaster. Instead, we did a lesson on perseverance. Each day this week, I gave them a different number search. I'm proud to say that by the end of the week, there were no more outbursts. In fact, my students were excited to complete them! We made a big deal of our progress each day. Basically, what could have been a nightmare, turned out well after all.

New Student - I know that this is strange to put in the Good section. Normally I wouldn't. I got 10 whole minutes notice that I was even getting a new student (already a plus since he didn't just show up at my door)! Luckily he was/is pretty quiet. The real reason I put this in here is that I am lucky I got him. Apparently his brother in fifth grade is out of control and even had to spend half the day with the Dean on his second day of school! I'm hoping he doesn't change!
