Make It Thursday - Whisper Phones

Confessions of a Frazzled Teacher

One of my most loved resources are the Whisper Phones in my room. You can buy these but I always felt they were flimsy and too expensive. I wanted to make a set (I have 6 - perfect for a small group). In all honesty, I had my dad make me a set. This week I had him take pictures of everything you need when he went on one of his many trips to the hardware store! (Thanks Dad!)

What are Whisper Phones?

These are objects that take the shape of a telephone. Students talk into one end and listen through the other. These are great for readers that need to hear themselves read.

This is what a Whisper Phone looks like when it's completed. Mine are wrapped in Duct Tape to look nicer. Too bad they are packed away at school, so I can't share a pic.

Where to find the materials?

All of these items can be found at almost any hardware store (usually in the plumbing section). The pics below all came from Menards .

1 and 1/2" PVC 90 degree Elbow - You need one of these for each Whisper Phone. This piece is the cheaper one (only 64 cents) because it has two female ends.

1 and 1/2" PVC 90 degree Street Elbow - You need one of these for each Whisper Phone. This piece is the more expensive one (at 99 cents) because it has one female and one male end. This is what connects the two pieces together.

Duct Tape (optional) - I wrapped my Whisper Phones in Duct Tape to make them look prettier.

How do I make these?

1. Take the two pieces of PVC pipe and put them together. You do not need to glue them. DONE!

2. Wrap the pieces in Duct Tape if you prefer.

3. I would recommend cleaning them on a regular basis. Even with Duct Tape on them, you can still wash them.

What things would you like to make on Thursdays with me?
