The Frazzled Teacher Recommends: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof

Confessions of a Frazzled Teacher

Do you love books as much as I do? I definitely consider myself an avid reader! I am always on the lookout for new books while taking the time to reread my favorites. Join me each Thursday as I share a classroom treasure with you. Let me know what you think of the book and what book you would recommend!

I first talked about Throw Your Tooth on the Roof when I wrote Dental Health Month: Resources and Activities for your Classroom. Today, I just wanted to share a little more detail about this book.

It may not look like it from the cover, but this book is nonfiction. It divides the world into continents and shares traditions from individual countries when it comes to children losing their teeth. (Great review for geography too!) One tradition, in a surprisingly large number of countries, is throwing the tooth on the roof. This is definitely an unusual one to my students (and me)! It's fun to share other cultures' traditions and let students know that not everyone shares the same beliefs as them.

While this is a picture book, it is definitely a wordy one! When I use this for my read aloud, I need to allow at least two days to get through the book. If I don't have enough time to read it through completely, I will at least read one country from each continent. It's definitely great for Dental Health Month!

What book do you recommend?
