I love Chris Van Allsburg books! They are beautifully written and the pictures seem to tell another story. I could recommend the classic, The Polar Express, but I wanted to share some of his other books that others may not know as much about.
Bad Day at Riverbend looks like a simplistic book. Many pictures are in black and white. Then, as the story goes on, it looks as if someone has scribbled in the book. I pretend to get mad when reading this book, complaining about who would draw in the book!
The book, itself, centers on Ned, the sheriff, who has to deal with a mysterious light that is causing havoc on the town. Anytime the light appears, citizens freeze up. When it disappears, people, animals, and scenery are covered with a colorful mess.
When you get to the end there is definitely a twist! The book turns out to be a coloring book that belongs to a child. I love when students can guess this before the story ends. There are a lot of picture clues to help students realize this. This makes the book a great one for drawing conclusions.
Here are some other great books by Chris Van Allsburg:
Jumanji may be one that many of heard about since it has been made into a movie a couple of times. However, the book definitely differs from the movies (especially the second one). It makes a great compare/contrast activity.
Did you know that Jumaji has a sequel? It's called Zathura. This one is set in space. There is a lesser known movie made about this one. Comparing and contrasting the two books would be another fun activity.
Two Bad Ants is another one of my favorites! It's just a great book to read and enjoy!
